Every time you have an important dinner or a meeting to dress up for, rummaging through your closet for the perfect outfit becomes an inevitable part of your routine. Most of the time, you cannot find what you need, not because you don’t have the items in your closet but because they are lost somewhere between piles of clothes. The key to save all the time you put into picking out clothes in the morning is to simplify your closet.

Get storage containers and garbage bags

Before you begin to sort through clothes you’ll need to separate the ones you won’t need. These can be anything from the scarf you bought just because it was on sale or shirts you may have discarded but not disposed. You’ll need your wardrobe space for clothes of the current season. Clothes that won’t be worn for the season can be stored in containers. This will leave you with a lot more hangers. There will always be items you can let go of easily which can be donated or put aside to send to a local recycling center.

Ask yourself these questions while you pick items your closet can do without-

  • Does it still fit?
  • Can it be worn with other pieces I own?
  • Is it still in fashion?

Organize by essentials

The aim for organizing and simplifying your closet is to make it easier to reach out for the clothes you’ll need most. Keep daily basic wear on middle shelves where you can find them easily. Save the top and bottom shelves for things you’d wear rarely.

Try creating a capsule wardrobe. Here are a few, everyday basic must-haves:

  • A white T-shirt
  • Dressy evening tops
  • At least two pairs of denim pants
  • 7 formal shirts for the work week
  • At least 3 formal bottoms (pants/skirts)

Organize by Categories

This is the rule clothing stores abide by. There is a reason why stores have separate spaces for pants, tops, shirts and dresses. Apply the same trick to your own closet and hang tops together in the same row and dresses and pants in separate rows. That way, you won’t end up with a dress when you’re ruffling through to find a pair of shorts. Also, separate the clothes you wear at home from the clothes you wear outdoors.

When it comes to simplifying your closet, less really is more in terms of time and space saved. You’re not only being organized but also avoiding spending money on new clothes.
